> Tools of the trade

Ah, how I love good open source programs ^-^. I shall be using FlashDevelop, Paint.net, DAME and Flixel to piece together this project. All very powerful and all very free!

I’ve not yet decided which program to use for my audio yet, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it!

I’ve chosen Flixel as the AS3 framework as from what I’ve heard its very powerful, relatively easy to use and has plenty of documentation – so long as you understand what they are telling you (‘super’, ‘class’, ‘variable’, ‘calls’…)

Background design notes are scattered among a notepad as well as feverish sketches. I might dig out the scanner and upload them for fun!  Some ideas I’ve already began to experiment with on screen, such as that prototype sprite as the post image =)

So I’ve decided to try my hand and Actionscript, the coding language built into Flash. I fancy learning something new, thats apart from standard designing and website development. To do this, I’m attempting to remake my old uni project ”Super Gonaka‘.

This was produced using ActionScript 2, and by my own admission wasn’t terribly well put together (from a technical point of view). It was also developed on a tight schedule and executed with one broken hand, so I’m looking forward to trying something new, and more than likely very, very tricky!

I was approached by aspa to come up with a web solution to their photography community. Satisfying their brief, I delivered a content managed site, where members may log in and access the members section, which includes a dynamic events calendar, user maintained gallery, a discussion forum and downloads to exclusive member content.

One of my current clients asked me to convert their current mediawiki and PhpBB forums to match my recent redesign work. Above you can see the results! Although they look almost identically visually, each had a different backend, meaning that there was a fair challenge to implement a unified design! My next job will be to format the content of the media wiki in a visually pleasing, easy to follow manner. Stay tuned!

Preparing for Christmas Holidays

I knocked this together after a dash of inspiration from here, illustrating our journey from the midland to Belfast later this month =)
